RESEARCH THEMES

Matthew Berriman heads a group that studies the diversity of eukaryotic parasites and their complex interactions with their hosts. In particular, they examine the genomic basis for differences in the biology of parasites causing malaria and other parasitic diseases. They specialise in using a range of omparative high-throughput genomic and transcriptomic techniques. Their approach starts with the establishment of reference genomes, followed by comparative sequencing of related strains or species to find candidate genes (or other sequences) relating to species-specific differences, such as diseases tropisms.

The group currently contains two Project Leaders, 4 post-doctoral computer biologists, and 4 programmers, and a PhD student. Working alongside the bacterial genomics teams, the parasite genomics group is encompassed within Pathogen Genomics – a group totalling more than 20, involved in sequence analysis and software support.

Principal scientific and technical personnel involved and their relevant experience:

Matthew Berriman (PI), Arnab Pain (Project Leader), and Ulrike Boehme (Senior Computer Biologist)
