RESEARCH THEMES

Dr Sarah Butcher is Head of the Bioinformatics Support Service of Imperial College; part of the Centre for Bioinformatics. Dr Butcher is a CO-I on the BBSRC/EPSRC Centre for Integrative Systems Biology at Imperial College (CISBIC),

Her first degree was in Applied Biology (Imperial) followed by a PhD in Cellular Immunolgy from the National Institute for Medical Research (CNAA). She then worked as a postdoctoral researcher in Virology for the NERC Centre for Virology and Environmental Microbiology, Oxford. Subsequently she joined Oxford University Bioinformatics Centre - which she later managed for 3 years. Sarah took up her post at Imperial in June 2002 to set up the Bioinformatics Support Service.

Her main research interests are in the areas of:

  •     Practical application of e-science methodologies in bioinformatics
  •     Genome annotation
  •     Large scale data management and integration for bioinformatics and systems biology
  •     Increasing usability of bioinformatics tools, software and interfaces for wet-lab researchers
  •     Next generation sequencing and its application to biological problems
